Intervention in Early Childhood Can Reduce Childhood Obesity

Although childhood obesity is a growing problem in our society, fueled by complex and diverse factors, early intervention in child care settings can positively affect the instances of overweight children.

Rub Natale, Ph.D, Psy.D., explains that “Children as young as 7 years old are experiencing health consequences of being overweight.” Seven is certainly young for weight-related health problems, and Dr. Natale believes that early intervention, involving the whole family, is crucial to reducing the causes and subsequent effects of childhood obesity.

Natale and her colleagues conducted a six month study of an intervention group of 2 to 5 year old children from low income families in eight subsidized child care centers in Miami Dade County, Florida. They found that intervention involving children and their families produced a decrease in overweight children within their study sample. The study revealed a decrease in the percentage of at-risk for obesity children from 16 to 12 percent.

The classroom-based aspect of the study included education and menu modifications, such as an increase in water consumption and increase in vegetable and fruit snacks. Teachers incorporated nutrition and physical activity in to the curriculum as well.

The home-based program featured monthly parent dinners that focused on educating parents about the food pyramid and newsletters offering tips for healthy eating options.

The researchers are hopeful that this tangible evidence of the impact of eating habit modification and education will impact child care center meal policies and influence adult behavior.
