Autism is a behaviorally-defined condition in which children exhibit a range of behaviors.
There are three major concerns in autism: qualitative impairments in social interaction; qualitative impairments in communication, both verbal and non-verbal; and restrictive repetitive stereotyped behaviors.
Behaviors must be present before the age of 30 months. However, it can be difficult to obtain a diagnosis before the age of three because the behaviors that define autism are often disregarded because of the young age of the child.
In But He Knows His Colors, four children with a diagnosis of autism demonstrate some of the characteristic behaviors. The children (who are all under the age of three) and their families were filmed during evaluation by the interdisciplinary team from the New Mexico Autism Program.
The video is produced as an instructional tape to assist in teaching families, educators, early interventionists, occupational therapists, speech and language pathologists, and physicians about the spectrum of behavioral characteristics seen in children with autism who are under the age of three. It speaks to the importance of early diagnosis and intervention for children and their families.
