Viewers watch as teachers at High/Scope's Demonstration Preschool in Ypsilanti, MI interact as partners with children throughout the daily routine.

Supportive relationships between adults and young children are at the hear of this preschool educational approach. See the following strategies illustrated in this two-part video:

  • Put youself at the child's physical level
  • Observe and watch what the child is doing
  • Listen and strive to understand what the child is saying
  • Take cues, directions and ideas from the child in play and conversation
  • During conversational turns offer comments and acknowledgments

Part I introduces interaction strategies, demonstrates their use in two work time scenes --Making Pretend Salf and Covering Foam with Glue -- and includes a teacher commentary on each scene.

Part II contains additional classroom scenes from each part of the daily routine --planing time, work time recall time, small-group time, large-group time and outside time. These scenes illustrate the adult-child interaction strategies presented in Part I. The adult-child interactions in this section are presented without commentary to encourage viewer analysis and discussion.
