This book is meant to guide both parents and child-care providers in methods to foster healthy growth and development of children from birth to age five. It also discusses ways to work with children who are already at-risk - that is, children who are exhibiting behavior patterns that set them apart from others.
The book begins with chapters describing the crisis in the field of early child care - an increasing demand for child care coupled with too few and poorly trained caregivers, and describes the characteristics of a good early child care setup in the child?s home or at a center.
The remainder of the book describes ways to nurture young children at each stage of development and how to intervene in ways that may help compensate for the bad experiences of at-risk children.
