With sets children put things together based on a common characteristic. With classification children join or separate sets.

This video shows children playing with sets, wearing sets, manipulating materials with a variety of characteristics, and using dramatic play kits.

It also discusses seriation (ordering) in which children compare more than two things and put them in order in terms of common elements, learning that "three is more than two."

Sample activities: playing with nesting toys, using graduated measuring cups and spoons, taking turns in order, and following a sequence.
