Product Description

This project, which follows the growth of two children over twenty years, is designed as a resource for educators who teach child and adolescent development.

This "stimulus video" is a video of short clips, without voice-over naration, designed to stimulate classroom discussion and encourage higher-order learning.

Normal Development in Middle Childhood and Adolescence-Complete Version (NDMCA-CV) includes a set of 4 DVDs with a separate in-depth 105 page instructor?s manual. This version covers ages 10 to 20 for Sarah, and ages 5 to 15 - for Brian, in detail, with an epilogue clip of the children's grandfather (Simon Fox) at 95 years, 171 video clips, 6 hours total running time.

Beginning with the first installment, Normal Development in the First Ten Years of Life: Complete Version (NDFTYL-CV), topics include

  • Separation-individuation
  • Emotional development
  • Cognitive development
  • Psychosocial development
  • Psychosexual development
  • Temperament and genetics
  • gross and fine motor activity
  • speech and language development
  • Attachment and anxiety

  • Reaction to trauma
  • Risky behaviors

Academic, social, and family arenas are addressed, including peer group interaction, sibling issues and parenting techniques.

Some tasks are repeated over a several year span to demonstrate growth in a particular area.

This second ten-year installment, NDMCA-CV, continues these themes, and also includes additional topics such as

  • launching
  • time management
  • mentalizing
  • classroom behavioral systems
  • changing social groups
  • romantic relationships, and
  • adjusting to college

Settings include home, school, sporting events, college tours, with friends, conversations with mom, and formal interviews.

This stimulus video is designed for teachers of normal development to use as a teaching aid in their classes. To our knowledge, this is the only normal development video series that follows the growth of two children longitudinally and continuously from infancy through adolescence.

The clips have been chosen for their power to get students thinking and talking about representative developmental phases or challenges. Clips may be humorous, thought-provoking, illustrative, troubling, provocative, or controversial. The clips illustrate typical theoretical teaching points that are better understood when demonstrated by real children, seen in the context of their lives.

Students will have the opportunity to get to know these children, to empathize with them, and to delight in watching them grow up.

This video resource can be used in any discipline that includes normal development as part of its curriculum. Because the vignettes are meant to illustrate the teacher?s points and provide a stimulus for discussion, the video is useful for teaching students at any level.

The instructor?s manual includes an in-depth introduction for use with the video series, a description of each clip with clip length and child?s age, and suggest discussion points for each clip. The manual cross-references the clips with various commonly taught topics. It also provides suggested references for groups of clips by topic.

Comments from reviewers

"Geri Fox has given the mental health field a compelling gift. Following in the footsteps of Jean Piaget, Mary Ainsworth and other early pioneers, Fox?s film provides beautiful documentation of normal development of two children as they progress through middle childhood and adolescence. The video is an essential tool for any educator."

"The perfect companion for Geri Fox?s outstanding original video series. These sensitive videos can be used in any setting at any educational level as a stimulus for discussion or to demonstrate a teaching point. There is no other resource that I know of that is so rich in reaching normal child and adolescent development."
