A brief history of the research and methodology for treating autism in infancy based on the retrospective analysis of home movies is presented.
The use of home movies overcomes many of the methodological shortcomings that occur in research based purely on anecdotal parental accounts. This is because the data and information obtainable from home movies are not subject to the inaccuracies caused by the passage of time and the vagaries of parental recall. For this reason home movies allow the researcher to study the true history of the specific case involving autism as recorded by the camera enabling him to individualize a treatment program and then implement it at a much earlier date than would be possible otherwise a program tailored to address on a personal basis the core dysfunctions of a given child's autism.
The presentation consists of four parts:
Part I using video clips addresses the different types of onset focusing primarily on the early- and the late-onset type.
Part II describes pathways of early social and non-social attention in the first year of life.
Part III examines using the Behavioral Summarized Evaluation Scale regarding the time as well as the type of onset including the frequency and stability of symptoms during the first year of life.
Part IV examines recent research on late-onset children and the vulnerability of these children to regression.
