Children in the Hospital
(SKU: 41413)
This classic, filmed in 1962, documents the coping behaviors of children, ages 4 to 8 years, as they attempt to manage the pain and worry of hospitalization. The film follows two girls through their hospitalization and contrasts their experiences and emotional responses.
Mary Francis, 5 years old, was admitted for five days as a result of an infection. She was prepared for the admission and it was her second hospital stay. Diane, 4 years old, sustained a traumatic injury requiring an emergency admission.
The film records the girls as they face separation, painful procedures, hospital routine, and interactions with health care staff and other children. The film also looks at a play session for a group of boys, ages 6 to 9 years, directed by a social group worker. Each boy describes the reason for his hospitalization.
The group is offered medical equipment and dolls for doctor play. Through the play each child addresses his own situation, demonstrates his understanding, and expresses his concerns. The film demonstrates that in stressful situations children adjust better when they understand what is happening to them and that when stressful situations are dealt with successfully children are stronger.
