Styles of Parenting
(SKU: 41519)
In this video Dr. Robert Karen discusses the theory of attachment, a recent and sometimes controversial theory of relationships. Attachment theory addresses the subject of love, how it develops, how it sometimes goes tragically awry, and how it can be repaired.
Attachment theory holds that early family experience plays a central role in determining how we become who we are. Three broad styles of parenting have been identified. Each style has a different effect on the quality of a child's emotional life.
Issues and objectives discussed are...
1) parenting styles,
2) the three attachment patterns: securely attached, emotionally detached, and fretful,
3) the importance of the first year of life,
4) how the quality of attachment affects self-esteem,
5) the importance of fathers as attachment figures,
6) considerations for returning to work after a baby's birth,
7) the relationship of attachment and heredity to aggressiveness in children,
8) how a relationship with one's parents affects the relationship one has with one's own children, and
9) it is never too late to repair one's attachments.
