Based on developmentally appropriate best practices, research, NAEYC standards, and Head Start guidelines, this curriculum can be used with parents as part of parental education training sessions, or by parents at home Supports Early Reading First programs.
Video I, entitled Play to Learn shows parents simple, engaging activities that help develop children?s imagination and problem-solving ability. It demonstrates how household items, blocks, and paint can develop vocabulary and counting as well as teach cause and effect. It also shows ways to develop physical coordination skills and social skills such as cooperation, listening, and self-discipline.
Video II, entitled Steps to Reading stresses the importance of parents in their children?s literacy. It also explains how speaking and listening are critical and shows simple activities to do with babies and toddlers. Also discussed is how reading to children provides them with valuable pre-literary skills as well what parents can expect of children in the way of writing skill.
Includes masters for handouts containing parent activities. The Leader?s Guide contains directions for conducting workshops.
