Studied more than any other relationships, marriage, researchers have concluded, is the one familial relationships that is most closely linked to personal happiness, health and companionship.
It?s no wonder, then, that the majority of middle-aged adults consider their spouse or partner to be their closest friend and the person with whom they are most intimate.
Current research on these intimate relationships is shared in this video along with an examination of how they adapt and change during the years when many couples become ?empty nesters? and some find themselves needing to negotiate a unique new relationship with their adult children who have moved back into the family home.
A discussion of sexual convergence is also included, which is a phenomena that often characterizes the middle-adult years when men and women tend to feel less tightly bound to traditional sexual roles than before.
In addition, the video provides an overview of the issues that middle adults confront when, as members of the ?sandwich generation,? they must continue to care for their children as they assume greater responsibility for their aging parents.
