In a culture obsessed with competition and the rush to prepare children for college before they are even out of diapers, play is often perceived as idle, superfluous, and extra-curricular.
For the teacher who understands the importance of play, the challenge is to convince parents that a half-hour spent playing dress-up is as vital to a child’s growth as counting from 1 to 10.
This video outlines the many ways in which play affects the social, emotional, and cognitive growth of children from birth through age eight, years crucial to their development. The video is organized in five segments to highlight the many ways play can enrich a child’s life.
Each segment provides instructors with the chance to pause the tape to allow for discussion of the concepts presented. Appearing in the program are teachers and other early childhood experts who use real life scenes of infants, toddlers, and school-age children in such settings as a children’s museum, parks, beaches, and at home to support their rationale for the importance of play.
The key role of parents, according to the experts in this program, is to “provide playspace, playmates, and playtime. Children need unstructured time and opportunities to play alone, with other children, and with their fathers and mothers.”
