Primary Caregiving promotes the value of a primary caregiving system for babies and toddlers and their parents. It focuses on the experience of one child, Cai, and follows through his daily experiences with his primary caregiver, Cecilia.
The close, secure attachment relationship which exists between child and caregiver is clear to the viewer. From his secure base Cai is free to explore, play, and engage in his environment knowing that Cecilia is close by when needed.
The role of the professional in developing and maintaining secure attachment relationships with children is explored and developed. Through following the child's day, practical considerations of primary caregiving are demonstrated and viewers gain an insight into how a primary caregiving system could work for them in their center environments.
The footage was taken over three days within the normal operations of a busy baby room. Viewers gain a strong sense of a calm, happy environment which meets the needs of children.
The voiceover guides the viewer and highlights the theoretical foundation for attachment based programs. The parents perspective of the benefits of primary caregiving is also presented.
The video is designed to promote reflection and discussion for both child-care professionals and center management teams. The written guide can be used by individuals or staff teams to generate discussion of the benefits of primary caregiving and to explore caregivers values and attitudes in relation to primary caregiving. A number of exercises encourages child care teams to work through the practical issues associated with implementing primary caregiving.
The contents of the video and guide are well grounded in theory and have been tested in a practical way through implementation over five years at the Lady Gowrie Child Centre in Adelaide.
